OVERTONE SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES MANAGETONE 2004™ for EXCHANGE

Email Archiving and ILM Solution Addresses Efficiency, Management and Compliance Issues

BETHESDA, Maryland --- July 15, 2004. Overtone Software Inc. has announced release of ManageTone2004™ for Exchange, an email lifecycle solution designed specifically to meet the requirements of for Microsoft messaging environments, and address the costs of email convenience: efficiency, management and compliance

Mark R. Anderson, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Overtone Software, Inc., noted that the sheer volume of emails imposes unique demands on data management systems and explained how information life cycle management (ILM) solutions respond to these demands.

"Over 100 million emails are sent daily, and compliance regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley require organizations to track their email from the moment a message hits the enterprise, and levy stiff penalties for non-compliance. ManageTone 2004™ for Exchange was produced exclusively to provide a 360-degree view of the message lifecycle for this complex level of data management," he explained.

Mr. Anderson also noted litigation response as another cost of email convenience. "Compliance audits may be avoidable, but there are no guarantees against lawsuits. Increasingly, company email is subject to subpoena, and this has become an area of vulnerability. Many organizations will keep 30 days' worth of email on their servers, but after that, the only place a particular email message can be located with close to 100% probability is on backup tapes. Costs of restoring, searching, de-duplicating, and presenting an email trail to the court from backup tapes can run between $4000-5000 per backup tape. Often, the cost of response exceeds damages sought, and many defendant organizations are electing simply to settle."

ManageTone 2004™ for Exchange reduces exposure to loss of data by tracking email from arrival in the enterprise to its disposal, with redundancy of archived copies. By tagging email into a lifecycle management database which sits on fast, searchable nearline storage, ManageTone 2004™ for Exchange allows IT organizations to respond to compliance and litigation requests in minutes and at no additional costs, compared to the weeks, overtime, and expense consumed trying to construct an audit trail from backup tapes, or the inconvenience of a corporate-wide hard-drive audit.

Overtone Software, Inc., was founded in 1998 by a group of storage-experienced engineers and entrepreneurs on the vision that converging of data growth rates and regulatory compliance requirements would redraw storage paradigms and require new solution sets --such as data lifecycle management, report and search tools, and database archiving --- and to provide enterprise computing environments with "finishing touch" software products for best-of-breed solutions.
