US Army Research Development & Engineering Command (RDECOM) Standardizes Information Lifecycle Management on Overtone Software
Bethesda, MD—September 30, 2005 ---Overtone Software Inc., a leader in data lifecycle management solutions, announced today that US-Army Research , Development & Engineering Command (RDECOM), has chosen ManageTone Lifecycle Suite to automate management of the company’s ever-growing, heterogeneous data assets.
Headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, RDECOM coordinates and directs worldwide activities in aviation and missile research, material analysis, communications electronics, tank automotive research, battlefield and combat simulation, and joint international cooperative efforts. The Command IT center hosts research and analyzes results of this wide range of activities, and management of diverse information sets has quickly become a challenge to the Command’s expanding NAS environment.
“The Command was created to centralize and coordinate the findings of our various research branches to facilitate the integration, maturing, and demonstrating emerging technologies to field the right equipment, in the shortest time, for our soldiers,” says program manager Robert Magness. “Our storage systems respond at blinding speed, but that is not a reason to burden those systems with inactive data that has already been protected multiple times.”
RDECOM brought in Overtone to asses data inventory, and manage inactive assets to less expensive secondary disk. “Prior to installing Overtone, our IT managers relied primarily on inefficient manual processes to manage storage resources and poll user directories,” continues Magness, “We chose ManageTone™ because it identifies inactive data and moves it seamlessly to secondary storage. This has allowed us to reduce our backup window by 30%, and leave only mission-critical data on high performance disk.” In addition, Overtone’s ManageStore PST migrator allows the Command to search and migrate assets out of .PST files and place them in more easily managed and protected volumes on secondary storage.
“Overtone’s native API-based support is a critical piece in our overall solution set,” says Overtone Software CTO Demsas Abraha. “A lot of solutions rely on less than native approaches such as links and shortcuts. The customer wanted 100% confidence in being able to get their data back, which we are able to deliver through API-based integration.”
